Hockey dad i need a woman guitar

They consist of Zach Stephenson , on guitars and vocals; and Billy Fleming on drums. This was the foundation, also, of their musical friendship, surreptitiously trying their luck with any instrumentation to hand when nobody was looking. By 18, they were touring, coming upon the name Hockey Dad from a Simpsons episode. Their sound attempts to evoke the sandy beaches and surfboards of The Beach Boys in a more current frame of mind, Australian style.

Hockey Dad release new single ‘In This State’

We know you are too. Lately, there's been no shortage of ear-grabbing musical talent coming from down under. Whether it be the burnt psychedelia of Tame Impala or the beer-swigging garage rock of Dune Rats, Australia is making some seriously solid contributions to the musical landscape in Along with artists from all over the world, SXSW might be the best year yet for to see new bands from Australia.

It's a stylistically mixed bag representing numerous genres, and audiences get to reap all the rewards of this musical variety. Sydney-based New Wavers Big White sure know how to write a hook. From the opening chords plucked on "You Know I Love You", the band memorably and passionately states their case. Big White have clearly done their homework within the New Wave genre. You can almost picture vocalist Cody Munro Moore sitting in his room, dutifully absorbing each and every aspect of The Cure.

Luckily, the band has foregone the caked on makeup. How best to describe Spookyland? They've got an us vs. This isn't music you can dance to, but it's certainly fitting for a more somber mood. One of the best aspects of Spookyland is that you feel like you want to be on their side.

Hockey Dad's biggest and perhaps best song is called "I Need a Woman", and you can feel that romantic longing by the time the first inkling of a chorus comes around. Their easy going, surf rock sound isn't all that dissimilar from bands like The Drums, or Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Like those groups, Hockey Dad is at their best when they commit fully to the easy, breezy pop of their musical forefathers. It comes at little surprise that Stonefield is made up of four siblings.

Their music has a homogenized closeness that can only result from fighting over a shared family bathroom a hundred times. Despite this, Stonefield are fully capable of surprising. If there's one thing we've seen out of Australian bands lately, it's that they've got a real diversity in sound.

You've got big, club banger DJ's like Alison Wonderland on one end of the spectrum, and dreamy, floating-on-a-cloud sound conjurers like Methyl Ethel. Both bands have strong female vocalists, backed up by twinkling, driving lead guitar. Also like Beach House, Methyl Ethel bring an added muscle to their live show. The Gooch Palms would never claim to be reinventing the wheel. After all, if it ain't broke, why fix it? The Gooch Palms are undoubtedly indebted to proto-garage punk band The Cramps, right down to their vaguely glammy, unkempt appearances.

However beholden The Gooch Palms might be to a certain musical area of the past, the fact of the matter is that they're making good on the genre in the present. Harts, whose real name is Darren Hart, is a multi-instrumentalist talent who made waves on the strength of his Hendrix-like guitar theatrics and sheer talent for pop hooks.

His music comes off a little like Neon Indian, if you were to replace the 's-owed sampling with sheer rock and roll instrumental talent. His ace proficiency on the electric guitar is not to be underestimated. If you don't want to take our word for it, just know that Prince is a fan.

We can say with full confidence that DZ Deathrays put on a bonkers show; they've played one of our parties before. Given their band name; and with songs names like "Blood on my leather" and "The Mess Up", you kind of know what you're getting into with DZ Deathrays. Glitchy atmospherics and vulnerable poetics have nothing to do with the music these guys make. They're more interested in singing songs about getting fucked up, chugging 9 beers and then throwing up on their amps- AFTER they've played an awesome show, that is.

Synth-pop duo Cosmo's Midnight have a sound that is instantly recognizable. At its core, the band is made up of fat, juicy dance beats accompanied by delicately catchy vocals courtesy of singer Cosmo Liney. Their pop formula is deceptively simple, and reveals multiple layers upon repeated listens. Cosmo's Midnight are the type of band that could easily find itself comfortably placed on any number of chilled out party playlists, but carries a newfound urgency when seen in a live setting.

Sydney-based trio DMA'S have gained a reputation for catharsis. Listen to more than two of their songs and you see that it's completely well-deserved. The band are expert craftsmen of huge moments. Some people start bands to get girls, fame, party, or all of the above.

It's pretty clear that DMA'S do this because they need to. Songs like "Too Soon" have all the fiery condemnation of a breakup letter, as well as the associated emotional release.

For two childhood friends from a small coastal town in Australia, Hockey Dad has come a long way in their relatively short existence.

F our years ago, Zach Stephenson and Billy Fleming were just a couple of aspiring rockers living two doors apart in the unassuming coastal town of Windang, Australia. The EP soon hit the national airwaves and the rest, you could say, is history.

Late last year we introduced you to Hockey Dad , the surf-pop rocking, Simpsons-referencing best buds from Wollongong. Tired of seeing the talent of the Leisure Coast go unnoticed, the project was conceived to promote and support the creative community and driven by the desire to show the rest of the country what Wollongong can produce. We brought you their first surfy single Lull City , which serves as the first track on the release. The energetic chords, splashy percussion and crooning vocals lead into the aforementioned latest single which exhibits a less dense sound, taking the jangly route to a poppier outcome. Beach House is pluckier and upbeat until the strummy distortion and tom-toms take over, with a guitar breakdown that sounds and smells like North Wollongong Beach.

Review: Hockey Dad - Boronia - 3 stars

Boronia is a ripping album, boasting songwriting chops and production know-how usually found in bands with far more experience. Surf rock is a genre known for its energy and positivity, and it's fantastic that they've championed its core attitude and aesthetic while hoisting it up head and shoulders above others in terms of quality and accessibility. I Need A Woman is a jangly wonder, a long lost doo wop song slathered with guitars and a chunky back beat. It's engaging, catchy and thanks to a smart mix has plenty of depth. It invites you in and it gives you room to breathe garage often has a bludgeoning effect, whereas Hockey Dad's approach is more subtle and congenial. Dylan's Place is a valiant attempt at real atmosphere. It has a chugging DIIV-like quality that is executed well and breaks up an admittedly repetitive tone late in the album. It fades into Two Forever , a dreamy Beach House homage that has surprising emotional impact. Closing instrumental Grange caps off a great album on a wistful note, eyes firmly on the horizon, looking for the next set to roll in. Boronia is an ambitious record that really nails the upbeat vibe of the best surf rock and combines that with exciting ability and panache, and points to a band poised for great things.

A 13th resident of the Newmarch aged care home in western Sydney has died from coronavirus. There is a Grower's Area with food stalls from local producers, gardeners and farmers sharing stories and hosting workshops, a cinema featuring locally-produced films, and lots of art. Now in its third year, Grow Your Own is attracting bigger audiences and bigger names. Rosie Smith is the co-ordinator of the Grower's Area and said the festival is about giving the locals a music scene while also showing off what the region has to offer. It was a fascinating thing for people to learn about.

Wedgetails , Abstract Classic , Archy Punker. Following on from the recent success of I Need A Woman, the track continues to highlight the bands gritty but melodic brand of surf influenced rock. Hockey Dad - Boronia

Two bands opened up for Hockey Dad Aug. The four piece sounded pretty tight and most everyone was bobbing in time with the music. They were heads and shoulders above the other opener Muuy Biien. Hailing from Georgia, these guys were anything but peachy.
