DLA Piper LLP (US) - The Inside View

Join a dynamic and diverse team of talented professionals on a path where contributions and successes are rewarded. Departments are clearly demarcated and easily accessible. The main tasks within each position are properly outlined as well as adhered to, thankfully not stiflingly so. The programs I typically use are technologically satisfactory to properly complete one's duties. I truly feel that anything I need to do my work is available to me. And of course, the people are wonderful!

The best aspect about working for DLA Piper is the team energy we enjoy. From the most senior partner to the RICOH temp, there is a feeling of team effort and a desire to forward the business of the firm efficiently, with professionalism, dispatch and courtesy.

We work hard, appreciate each other's efforts and enjoy doing so. I love the firm's commitment to pro bono projects. So many people and community organizations need legal services. DLA Piper has been a leader in the community - helping veterans apply for special compensation, assisting applicants seeking asylum, preparing clemency petitions for non-violent inmates, and holding weekly reading programs for 4th to 7th grade students.

This is a small fraction of the great work that the firm does daily! Our business support teams are comprised of highly talented professionals who are key contributors to the business strategy sustaining our lawyers, clients and employees. Learn more about the work we do and our contributions to the business. Click to learn more. Using cutting-edge technology, we curate and deliver information and insights, on demand and cost efficiently, to lawyers and their clients for use in strategic decision making.

Our team offers a collegial, fast-paced and challenging environment, continuous career growth and access to the most innovative knowledge resources and platforms. The effectiveness of our work is immediate and clear. Researchers will swiftly see how their work enhances our business development and contributes to the success of the firm. The Competitive Intelligence team crafts custom-made research dossiers that analyze a client's business in depth, giving our lawyers critical insight into the client's legal and needs along with a competitive edge in the legal market.

With a deep understanding of global business and legal issues, the team understands how to home in on and then explain key data points to provide studies that are high level and information rich. We have built an expansive digital library platform to support the mobile practice of law. We also participate in Legal Lean workflow initiatives to improve client service delivery. The CI team is relatively new. One of the best aspects is the clout behind the name. I have had countless conversations with vendors who want our input on how to improve their products.

The sense has always been that if they can get it right for DLA Piper, then it will be the best possible product. I enjoy working at a firm that is recognized as the gold standard. I like being surrounded by smart people. That starts with our director, who always seems to be two steps ahead of her peers at other firms. It then extends through everyone on the team who can be counted on to come with questions from every conceivable angle, push themselves to find the best solutions, and search for ways to improve processes and enhance efficiency.

I have had a hand in hiring some exceptional team members who have contributed to the success of the firm. There are many great aspects to working at DLA Piper. I have been very lucky to be here for 12 years, first in the New York office and now in Tampa as part of the Business Operation Services team.

DLA Piper made that big office transfer and life change smooth and comfortable for me. There is a good office culture and great sense of collaboration throughout the firm. Even though it is such a large organization, we all feel like we are working together. Also, I greatly appreciate the good work-life balance afforded by the great benefits and a schedule that works for me and my family.

Since DLA Piper is a truly global firm with so many practices and services, I think one of the best aspects about working on my team is the daily interaction with such a diverse group of people from so many backgrounds.

Because our department comes into contact with so many practice groups and departments, I am constantly meeting new people and getting involved in new projects. Every day is unexpected because I can dive into new assignments all the time. It helps that I love learning new things and helping other people, so that makes my job enjoyable. My greatest achievement in the last couple of years is my professional development.

I am constantly striving to learn more, and my department provides many opportunities to learn about new research services and techniques. It also helps that, because we are working as such a close team, we are able to share our knowledge with each other.

I like to share anything new that I learn with my colleagues, and I am always learning from them too. I value DLA Piper as a professional organization with a personal touch. Communication is key to the success of my team, and management always strives to facilitate cooperation, efficiently and effectively.

Human Resources also does excellent work ensuring that staff is supported holistically. Another notable feature of DLA Piper is the commitment to staff training.

Our IT instructors do an excellent job of teaching classes and making educational materials available so we have the tools to work efficiently and effectively. Innovation is the first word that comes to mind when I think of my team. Due to the impact of technology in our field, we have transitioned from being what most think of as a traditional library to a national Research and Knowledge Services department, with re-designed workflows, extensive electronic resources and new methods of serving the firm.

This innovation has taken a great deal of time and effort, and I am proud to be part of the team that has brought something dynamic and significant to the table. I am proud of my department's work in transitioning from print to digital resources. We have worked to secure a seven-figure reduction in print costs while expanding our collection of electronic resources that offer the attorneys powerful new tools. This process has involved extensive planning, training and effort.

In the end, we have built something newer, more efficient and cost-effective. The Accounting team is a collaborative and talented team of finance and accounting professionals who help the firm make business decisions by providing accurate and actionable financial information.

The team ensures the accuracy of the firm's financial records and provides insight and recommendations on the financial position of the firm to senior leadership. The Accounting department is a fast-paced environment. Our expectations and goals are high, and so is the level of teamwork: when it comes to meeting goals, we take an all-hands-on-deck approach. We also offer the opportunity to work on a variety of interesting projects, outside of the cyclical accounting routine, that will challenge and provide career growth.

Our team works in close collaboration with firm leadership and departmental leadership to help develop an annual budget that is in alignment with the firm's budgetary and business goals. The best aspect about working for DLA Piper is being a part of such a reputable global organization.

Individuals pull together to ensure the success of the firm, while consistently providing a team atmosphere that is inviting. Together, we deliver the best products to our clients, and, whether we are client facing or back office, we work together to ensure we are meeting the exemplary standards that have been set forth by those who have laid the great foundation of this business.

The best aspect about working with the Accounting department is engaging with intelligent, highly motivated individuals on a daily basis. Our team is dedicated to providing quality work products to leadership to ensure that it has the necessary data to draw conclusions and make decisions about the future of the firm. Our management is committed to mentoring and providing the necessary guidance to further advance the team.

My most recent achievement is the ability to prioritize and find the right balance between parenthood and profession. As a working wife and mother to two boys under the age of three, I am constantly juggling the demands and challenges of home and work. I continue to find success each and every day while always remaining focused on my long-term career goals and aspirations. One of the best aspects about working for DLA Piper is the challenges. Over the last 20 years, my responsibilities have changed every couple of years, and there is always opportunity for new experiences.

Another aspect is the people. Even though we have grown into one of the largest law firms in the world, my department and other co-workers still feel like family. I have had the opportunity to learn from the best. One of the best aspects of being on the accounting team is the overall learning experience we get by taking on new challenges. I also feel the department works well together in order to succeed and promote itself within the firm. One of my greatest achievements over the past couple of years is the preparation of the January Partner distribution, the largest transaction of the year.

I have complete ownership of this project and feel it is a huge accomplishment. Our business development team works closely with firm leadership and partners to pursue and capture new business opportunities.

We were one of the first law firm business development departments to build a market-facing team of business developers with experience selling professional services, and we remain a leader in that area. Our pitch and proposal team works collaboratively with subject matter experts and business developers to create compelling proposals and RFP responses.

Our department serves the firm from the identification and qualification of opportunities through pursuit and pipeline management. The department demonstrates consistent growth in revenue generation and is viewed by the partnership as a key differentiator. We have industry-leading technology and applications to manage new business pursuits and track our impact across geographies, practice groups and sectors, and we consistently demonstrate growth in revenue generation.

The best aspect of working at DLA Piper is the opportunity to learn and grow. DLA Piper has given me the opportunity to take on new challenges that I would not have experienced anywhere else. These challenges have allowed me to gain new skills that I would not have developed with another employer. I will be able to use my new skills throughout my career and for the rest of my life.

The best aspect about working on my team is that everyone is willing to pitch in to help. I have never worked in any other place where all of my co-workers have been so willing to go the extra mile for each other. That is what makes the DLA Piper team so special. The greatest achievement I have accomplished since I started working here is receiving "job well done" praise from a former Senator. That was definitely the highlight of my week!

The commitment to client service and excellence and the can-do attitude that permeates the firm.

Globalism may be part of the DLA DNA, but so is a focus on local economies, and the associate experience is a mix of both worlds. EACH paw-paw tree stands tall and proud next to its companions in the forest. Its narrow, white trunk supports a flurry of leaves and luscious fruit. You might call DLA a law-law tree. It has over 4, attorneys in 40 countries around the world, and 28 offices in the US alone, with a presence in pretty much every major commercial center in the nation. The firm's Chambers USA rankings are mostly in the mid-tier, but it does pick up a few top-tier nods, notably for real estate. The majority of juniors work in either litigation or corporate, while the employment and real estate groups also take in more than a handful. One cool thing about working at such a large firm is that if you want to get involved in something, you can reach out all across the world — someone will do it, so you can make it happen! Cuts to legal aid partly behind increase in number of dedicated pro bono lawyers. The Australian bush fires have witnessed a concerted drive by the legal professional to help victims through co-ordinated pro bono programmes Shutterstock. More than 55 law firms globally employed 66 dedicated pro bono partners in , compared with just six in , in part because cuts to legal aid have crimped access to justice, prompting some charitable-minded firms to step in and fill the gap, according to the study co-authored by DLA Piper, the Australian Pro Bono Centre, the Pro Bono Institute in Washington DC and the Thomson Reuters Foundation. The vast majority of large law firms run pro bono programmes that are typically co-ordinated by partners although some employ professionals below partner-level to run their programmes.
