Managing partner of mckinsey

Kevin Sneader is doing something remarkable. He begins by explaining that the firm's odd partners are not judged on their ability to generate money. Instead, they are assessed on factors such as client impact and their standing within the partnership and with other colleagues. The fact he is willing to talk about the inner workings of this traditionally secretive firm is a demonstration of Sneader's determination to make good on his vow, made when he began in the top role last June, to open up the firm to the world. But the explanation is not quite complete.

How could it be that this profitable and fast-growing firm doesn't evaluate partners based on billings? In these firms, internal power, influence and pay are directly tied to billings.

Further research reveals that partners are expected to bill a certain amount each year. The firm insists there is no specific target, but AFR BOSS magazine has been told that partners understand clearly their billings need to be commensurate to their rank.

That can amount to millions, or even tens of millions, a year. It's an illustration that while Sneader may want to be more open, his instincts are to reveal the minimum and never to mention anything as gauche as money.

The catalyst for this slow-moving pivot towards transparency was the revelation of McKinsey's role in a political corruption scandal in South Africa in late During the project, McKinsey worked for a time alongside a local firm, Trillian, which stands accused of trying to siphon money from Eskom.

This followed outrage when details of McKinsey's fee became public, especially since Eskom is close to financial collapse. McKinsey has also been recently questioned about its engagements for the rulers of Saudi Arabia and for state-owned enterprises in China and Russia.

The firm has also denied any wrongdoing in China and Russia. McKinsey's internal inquisition following the South African scandal led the firm to reform the way it prices and selects public-sector work. In effect, it is expanding the factors it considers when looking at the risk of a project, including the risk to reputation.

The senior partners also agreed it might be time to reveal more about the firm's workings to the world. All the time. Here in Australia I can assure you we have walked away from plenty. It's all about the "front-page test" — how would it look if the details of the work were revealed on the front page of a newspaper?

Absolutely," Sneader says. Waldo Swiegers. It's hard to overstate how much of a change it is for a proudly self-governing firm such as McKinsey to acknowledge it might have to consider what outside parties think of its work. Regardless of its South African issues, business continues to boom for McKinsey. There is unprecedented demand for its consultants around the world, Sneader says. Sneader says there is strong demand for technology advice, the firm's implementation service and for traditional strategy advice.

Sneader's predecessor, Dominic Barton, has repeatedly apologised for the firm's actions in South Africa. Wayne Taylor. The complexity of the operating environments of many clients means that strategy advice is also back in demand. Preparing for interviews? Get RocketBlocks. This is a fun topic to discuss. I remember being floored when I first joined BCG and saw the salary bands presented internally! The fun part though is in the details that drive that variance. Let's look at the three big factors that drive that variance:. While everyone generally just says "Partner" all of these firms have multiple tiers of Partners and these types tend to have different fixed, base salaries. There are junior partners and senior partners. For example, at BCG there are junior partners referred to just as "Partner" and then senior partners called "Partner and Managing Director. Every firm has a different way of calculating partner compensation, so it can vary but they all generally look at the same drivers:.

If you don't make it through, you're reportedly encouraged to reconsider whether you're in the right profession. Nonetheless, it's always worth a try. On this basis, some pain might be ok. Dominic Barton, McKinsey's current managing partner, appears to have gone through more angst than most.

I expected to work hard; do what my clients asked; and, perhaps, learn some skills along the way. I was surprised to encounter a firm where values, ethics and principles were debated as often as spreadsheets and presentations, and where the question "What is the right thing to do?
