A week in the life of a young singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of A disk containing mysterious information from a CIA agent ends up in the hands of two unscrupulous and daft gym employees who attempt to sell it.

A laconic, chain-smoking barber blackmails his wife's boss and lover for money to invest in dry cleaning, but his plan goes terribly wrong. Tom Reagan, an advisor to a Prohibition-era crime boss, tries to keep the peace between warring mobs but gets caught in divided loyalties.

A rich but jealous man hires a private investigator to kill his cheating wife and her lover. However, nothing is simple when blood is involved. When a childless couple of an ex-con and an ex-cop decide to help themselves to one of another family's quintuplets, their lives become more complicated than they anticipated. A stubborn teenager enlists the help of a tough U. Marshal to track down her father's murderer. Six tales of life and violence in the Old West, following a singing gunslinger, a bank robber, a traveling impresario, an elderly prospector, a wagon train, and a perverse pair of bounty hunters.

An eccentric, if not charming Southern professor and his crew pose as a classical ensemble in order to rob a casino, all under the nose of his unsuspecting but sharp old landlady. Bloomington, Minnesota, Jewish physics lecturer Larry Gopnik is a serious and a very put-upon man. His daughter is stealing from him to save up for a nose job, his pot-head son, who gets stoned at his own bar-mitzvah, only wants him round to fix the TV aerial and his useless brother Arthur is an unwelcome house guest.

But both Arthur and Larry get turfed out into a motel when Larry's wife Judy, who wants a divorce, moves her lover, Sy, into the house and even after Sy's death in a car crash they are still there. With lawyers' bills mounting for his divorce, Arthur's criminal court appearances and a land feud with a neighbour Larry is tempted to take the bribe offered by a student to give him an illegal exam pass mark.

And the rabbis he visits for advice only dole out platitudes. Still God moves in mysterious - and not always pleasant - ways, as Larry and his family will find out. Written by don minifie You may have to be a believer Jewish or Christian to like this film, although some secular at least middle-aged midwestern Jews and others may find it worthwhile for the period details.

It is a modern version of the book of Job, which--of course you remember--contains a prologue in which God and Satan bet on whether Job will remain faithful and Satan then strikes down Job's flocks, children, and health; a series of speeches by three comforters with Job's responses; a speech by Elihu who is unhappy with the advice of the three comforters; the Lord himself answering Job directly out of the whirlwind 'who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

The book and the film address what Christian, at least theologians call theodicy, or how bad things can happen in the world when God, who supposedly controls everything, is supposedly good. For nonbelievers if you have any interest in the subject , the best way to think of this is perhaps to ask yourself whether the universe the Creation is on balance a good thing 'and God saw that it was good'. If so, then perhaps we somehow have an obligation to live moral lives and as Jews and Christians think of it to follow God's law.

If not, then perhaps it's every man for himself and the Devil take the hindmost. The Coens' answer, if I understand it correctly, comes out of the whirlwind at the end in the voice of Grace Slick. I personally prefer God's original response with its paean to astrophysics and evolutionary biology--'Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Gave you wings and feathers unto the ostrich? Who leaves her eggs in the earth, and warms them in the dust, and forgets that the foot may crust them or that the wild best may break them But the Coens' very different answer, while oddly Christian in emphasis, is fully consistent with both the s zeitgeist and with the midwestern Jewish community that they have so meticulously recreated. If you like this film, you really need to see it twice. But without giving anything away, if you see it once, be careful to pay attention to i the bribe that, like Schroedinger's cat, is alive and dead at the same time and ii the whirlwind at the end.

The Ending of ‘A Serious Man’ and the Crucible of American Judaism

Watch now. A renowned New York playwright is enticed to California to write for the movies and discovers the hellish truth of Hollywood. A week in the life of a young singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of A disk containing mysterious information from a CIA agent ends up in the hands of two unscrupulous and daft gym employees who attempt to sell it. In the deep south during the s, three escaped convicts search for hidden treasure while a relentless lawman pursues them.

Joel and Ethan Coen make movies like nobody else's, but even by their standards A Serious Man is in a class by itself: a complete original that's one of the brothers' best. After a deeply weird Yiddish folk-tale prologue set in 19th-century Poland and framed in the old 1. Larry Gopnik a superbly concentrated portrait in comic anguish by Michael Stuhlbarg is a college physics prof facing a welter of crises and distractions: review by the tenure committee, son Danny's bar mitzvah, a cryptic-verging-on-sinister protest from a Korean-American student, the alienation of wife Judith's affections by widower Sy Ableman, the ongoing encroachment of brother Arthur and his sebaceous cyst--and don't even mention the proto-Nazi who lives next door.

We learn from the Book of Job: Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. Such a man is Larry Gopnik. He lectures on physics in front of a blackboard filled with bewildering equations that are mathematical proofs approaching certainty, and in his own life, what can be sure of? Nothing, that's what. His wife is leaving him for his best friend.

Gods And Victims

I know of at least two Jews who were harmed—Ethan and Joel Coen. The movie is a deadpan farce with a schlemiel Job as a hero—Professor Larry Gopnik Michael Stuhlbarg , a physicist at a local university, whose life, in , is falling apart. The Coens begin mysteriously, with what feels like a Yiddish folktale. Long ago, in a shtetl somewhere in Eastern Europe, an elderly man, supposedly dead, wanders into the house of a married couple. One model for the tale is obvious: acting on his wager with Satan, God drives Job to despair. Yet Job, risking his life, questions his tormentor, and Larry does not. But a schlep and a weeper is a hero impossible to stay interested in. The Coens themselves grew up in a suburban area outside Minneapolis.

A Serious Man is a black comedy-drama film [2] written, produced, edited and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. Set in , [3] the film stars Michael Stuhlbarg as a Minnesota Jewish man whose life crumbles both professionally and personally, leading him to questions about his faith. In a prologue, a Jewish man in an unnamed 19th-century Eastern European shtetl tells his wife that he was helped on his way home by Reb Groshkover, whom he has invited in for soup.

‘A Serious Man’ came out 10 years ago. Here’s what real rabbis think of the Coen brothers film.

But what that view actually encompasses remains a brilliant mystery, writes Ed Power. E very Coen brothers movie is a mystery of one kind or another. It is one of those films that stays unknowable no matter how much of its dialogue you are able to quote by heart. What lingers is the unsettling imagery: that final, Wizard of Oz -evoking shot of a tornado bearing down on a school, in particular.

As Larry Gopnik Michael Stuhlbarg spends the film looking for answers, we are shown that God is not accountable to us for our personal misfortunes, but as the final scene demonstrates, we are still accountable to God. To understand A Serious Man , or at least to embrace its paradoxes, we must first look to its opening scenes, which force us into a paradox within a paradox. Dora tells Velvel that Groshkover died three years ago, and that Velvel was interacting with a dybbuk, an evil spirit. Velvel thinks his wife is being silly, but when Groshkover comes over, she stabs the man she believes to a dybbuk. At first, the wound is bloodless and then it starts to bleed.

A Serious Man

Apr 17, - A Serious Man isn't a movie to be “solved.” There's no secret meaning, no answer in the goy's teeth. It's a film that revels in its paradoxes.

Он не знал, как зовут этого человека. - Deutscher, ja. Вы немец. Мужчина нерешительно кивнул. Беккер заговорил на чистейшем немецком: - Мне нужно с вами поговорить.

“What’s Going On?’
